Sever Rd Coalition & Traffic Circle

  • Post author:

On Thursday, Commissioner Kirkland presided over the Coalition Meeting, which included discussions with two representatives from the County Highway Department, Commissioner Kirkland and his Assistant, and two Gwinnett County police officers. The meeting focused on the upcoming construction plans and traffic management for Sever Road.

Key Takeaways:

  • Traffic Studies and Trends: The County has conducted extensive traffic studies on Sever Road, analyzing traffic volumes and trends.
  • Construction Plans: Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025.
  • Traffic Circle: The planned traffic circle will have two lanes, a configuration the County has successfully implemented in similar situations.
  • Turn Lanes for School Traffic:
    • An extended turn lane ( heading south) will be constructed in front of the school allowing school traffic to access a dedicated right turn lane and remove them from the through traffic lane.
    • School traffic coming in the opposite (north) direction will have a dedicated left turn lane out of the traffic circle.
    • Flow through traffic (north) will have a dedicated lane.

While this may not completely solve the school traffic congestion problem, it is seen as a significant improvement. For the majority of the day, this new arrangement should facilitate smooth traffic flow in all directions.

School Zone Cameras:

  • The school cameras will be active starting Monday.
  • Speeders will be automatically captured by the camera, and tickets will be processed accordingly.

Crime and Traffic Enforcement:

  • The Sever Road corridor is one of the lowest crime areas in Gwinnett County based on police assessments.
  • Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or offenses, as this data is crucial for identifying habitual offenders and patterns.
  • Due to rampant speeding across the County, police resources are focused on the highest problem areas. Sufficient complaints may lead to targeted enforcement in our area.

Sales Tax Referendum:

  • A 1% sales tax referendum will be on the ballot this November.
  • This tax will fund mass transit improvements within Gwinnett County, excluding MARTA.
  • Proposed improvements include enhancements to Gwinnett Transit, bus stops, parking areas, express airport transportation, and services in and around Gwinnett.
  • Benefits include reduced vehicle traffic on our roads, with the 1% sales tax applicable to all purchases made in the County, including those by non-residents.
